Inquest into the Death of Matthew Rice

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Dr. John Carlisle will be the presiding officer and Jai Dhar will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Rice, 29 years old, died in hospital on September 9, 2020, following an interaction with officers from the Ontario Provincial Police. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Rice’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last four days and hear from approximately seven witnesses.
