Inquest into the death of John Gerarts
Mr. Gerarts, 57, died in hospital on November 26, 2017, after collapsing while handcuffed under the custody of a Toronto police officer. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Gerarts’ death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.
The inquest is expected to last three days and hear from approximately three witnesses.
The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2023. Dr. David Creery will be the presiding officer and Kate Forget will be inquest counsel.
